If you want to crochet a big, squishy throw to snuggle under then you’ve come to the right place! Here you can find all the info on the chevron blanket I made using super chunky blanket yarn, PLUS I’ve included the link to my favourite basic crochet chevron blanket pattern which you can use with any yarn so you can make your own!
My favourite weights of yarn are DK and Aran, but I went a bit rogue earlier this year and bought a ton of super chunky yarn. I've made some lovely cushions and toys using it, but needed to use up some of my stash to make room for some other crafty bits, so I made a big blanket for the autumn/winter. I decided on a chevron blanket as it's a really easy pattern and has a modern feel to it, and blocks of colour reduce the number of yarn tails to weave in.
Yarn
I used two different brands of acrylic Super Chunky yarn from my stash. Please note this is the approximate amount I used, as some skeins went a little further than others and your own tension and starting chain will determine the final amount - I'd suggest maybe getting extra if you want to make a blanket as big as mine:
Woolwarehouse Yarnsmiths ‘Snug As A Bug’ 300g skeins: 1 x Porcelain, 1 x Cookie, 1 x Soft Grey
Yarnspirations Bernat Blanket Yarn 300g skeins: 2 x Smokey Green, 1 x Grey Blue, 1 x Burnt Mustard
Colour Order
This is the colour order and number of rows I crocheted for my blanket:
YARN | NO. OF ROWS |
BERNAT SMOKEY GREEN | 10 |
BERNAT GREY BLUE | 7 |
YARNSMITHS PORCELAIN | 10 |
BERNAT BURNT MUSTARD | 10 |
YARNSMITHS COOKIE | 10 |
YARNSMITHS SOFT GREY | 7 |
BERNAT SMOKEY GREEN | 10 |
Hook
I used an 8mm hook – the recommended hook size for this yarn is 8mm but you may find a smaller or larger hook works better for you depending on your own tension.
Starting Chain
The multiples for this pattern are 15+16 so my starting chain for this blanket was 121.
Basic Chevron Pattern
My favourite free basic chevron blanket pattern that I used for this blanket can be found >>> here<<< I've used it with lots of different weights of yarn and it always turns out so lovely.
The edges on this pattern always seem to come out nice and straight, so you can choose to add a border or leave it without as it still looks great. I don't square off my chevron blankets as I like the wavy ends. It's a simple pattern which is easy to pick up and put down.
My super chunky colour block blanket came out at approx. 58 x 75 inches inches.
You could make a chevron blanket using the basic pattern in any yarn brand or weight, just adjust your hook size and starting chain accordingly.
Hopefully this has inspired you to make your own Chunky Colour Block Chevron Blanket! I’d love to see your makes, tag me on Instagram @harrietsduck
